What is an allergist?

An allergist is a highly trained medical or osteopathic doctor who has achieved the following level of education:
  • Four year Baccalaureate degree
  • Four year Doctorate of Medicine or Osteopathy (M.D. or D.O)
  • Three year hospital based fully accredited residency in either Internal Medicine or Pediatrics
  • Two to three year hospital based fully accredited fellowship in Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology

Physicians who have achieve this level of training are the only physicians eligible to become certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

The mission of MAAS is to promote  the advancement of research and dissemination of knowledge pertaining to allergic diseases. Any licensed physician in good standing whose major interest is allergy and immunology is eligible for election to membership in the Society. Active membership is for Diplomats of the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Pediatrics with subspeciality training in allergy and immunology, or Diplomats of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, a conjoint Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics.
